chapter 16. The Molecular Basis of Inheritance

Q. who found out the double helix?
Watson and Crick

Q. what was the conclusion of Hershey and Chase?
DNA was injected into the bacterium and that DNA was the hereditary material

Q. what are the four types of nucleotides in DNA?
Thymine, cytosine, Adenine and Guanine

the facts

1. DNA polymerases catalyze the reaction that adds new nucleotides to the growing DNA strand.

2. Transformation – a change in phenotype caused by assimilating external genetic material.

3. Hershey and Chase concluded that DNA was injected into the bacterium and that DNA was the hereditary material.

4. Two deoxyribose (sugar) phosphate chains form the outer backbone of the molecule with the hydrophobic bases in the middle.

5. A segment of DNA containing the damage is cut out by one repair enzyme, DNA polymerase replaces the nucleotides and DNA ligase closes the gap.

summary

DNA, the genetic material, is a double helix containing the nitrogen bases A (adenine) paired with T (thymine) and G (guanine) paired with C (cytosine). During replication, DNA "unzips," and then a complementary strand forms opposite to each original strand.
